Black script lettering reading "I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell" across a patch of skin in a sepia-toned photo.

Script quote tattoo on skin

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a two-line quote in black cursive script tattooed on skin, with a larger flourished capital I in each line. The linework is clean and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The sepia tone of the photo softens the background, and the text runs diagonally across the frame.

The ewes have decided I'm a fool, and Mrs Pargeter next door has decided I'm worse. She came up the lane on Tuesday with a casserole in a tea towel and a face like a funeral hymn, asking whether I'd been sleeping. I told her I had, mostly, in the chair by the Aga, which is what a sensible woman does in January when the snow sits on the top rail of the gate for a week.

The sheep are the problem. Every morning at half five I count them through the hay-barn door, thirty-one, thirty-one, thirty-one, and every morning one of them is standing in the wrong corner with her head on one side as if she has heard a joke nobody else got. I've told the vet this. He wrote something on his pad and asked whether I'd like to sit down.

So this morning I took the storm lantern and a tin of treacle lick and went out past the water trough, where the ice had gone to glass, and there was old black Dinah lying flat with her legs folded under her and a lamb steaming beside her. Thirty-two. Nobody had counted it but me, and I'd been right all along, which is not the same thing as being well.

I sent a note up the lane with the casserole dish, in my best capitals: 'I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell, and a fair amount of tired. Thirty-two. Come and see.' She came in her wellingtons, counted through the barn door with her lips moving, and didn't say a word, which is the kindest thing anyone has done for me since Christmas.
