Black script tattoo reading "but without the dark, we'd never see the stars" across the upper thigh, in a lettering style.

Quote script on a thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a person's upper thigh shows a black script tattoo reading "but without the dark, we'd never see the stars" in a single line that follows the angle of the leg. The lettering is crisp, with even, solid black ink and no visible shading or colour. A grey sweater sleeve and dark shorts frame the top of the image, and rings are visible on the fingers at the lower right.

The whole valley went black at ten past eight. Mrs Okonedo came out of the Crown with a candle in a jam jar, and within the hour half the village was standing in the lane with their heads tipped back, saying nothing at all. I had never seen so many stars. Your grandfather, who never once looked up in forty years of marriage, lay down on the bonnet of the Morris and wouldn't get off it until the milk went sour in the boot.

The lad from the electricity board came round the next morning, cross as a wet cat, and asked why we'd all been gawping at nothing. I gave him a cup of tea and told him what my own mother used to say: without the dark, we'd never see the stars. He thought I was being soft. Then he drove up the reservoir road with a torch and didn't come back for two hours.

Last week I asked the council to switch off the lamps on the old quarry road for one night a month. They said they'd look into it. So I've put the kettle on and I'm sitting out the back with a flask, waiting for the sky to fill up. Come up at Easter. Bring your good boots and a torch you won't need.
