Quote lettering tattoo along the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black lettering tattoo across the side of the torso, set in a bold, rounded typeface over six centred lines of text. The ink is solid black with clean, even edges and no shading, and the warm orange tones of the skin contrast with the dark letters. A yellow garment sits at the top of the frame and a pale background is visible at the right edge.

Ada Penhale climbed the iron stair of Scarrow Head with a jar of paraffin under one arm and the wind pulling at her shawl, because the lamp had gone dark for the first time in forty years and the boats were still out past the Gannet Rocks. Her husband Tom had sailed with the Mary Hale at the turn of the month, and fog had come down behind him like a shut door.

In the lamp room she found the old keeper's words scratched into the brass rail, worn so smooth she had to read them with her thumb: together, forever, never apart. Her mother had always said the sea was a great liar and the land a poor one, and that a light kept true would tell them both where it stood. Ada filled the reservoir, trimmed the wick with her nails, and struck the match three times before it caught.

All night she turned the great lens by hand, because the clockwork had seized in the damp. Near four o'clock a voice came up out of the grey, thin as a gull's cry, reciting the same words back to her. It was Tom, or it was the sea doing his voice, and she did not care which. She leaned over the rail and answered him, and the beam swept out across the water and found the Mary Hale riding low and whole.

Tom came up the stair at dawn with salt in his beard and said the fog had kept him honest. Ada hung the key on its nail. The distance had been real enough, she thought, but the heart had never once been in it. After that she kept the wick trimmed every night, in case the sea took it into its head to lie again.
