Black script lettering reading For you I shall live, with Roman numerals, tattooed along the neck behind a person's ear.

Script quote behind the ear

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote runs in a curved line from the hairline down behind the ear, ending in Roman numerals at the top. The lettering has even, fairly fine strokes with some variation in weight, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The photo is taken from the side at close range, with the ear and hair in frame and a light grey earring hanging below.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had found the gap in the awning again, and it dripped onto the trestle table in a steady tick that Mr Okafor said he could hear over the traffic. You had been turning the same tin of loose pocket watches for ten minutes, lifting each one to the grey light as though the hands might tell you which was the right one. Most had stopped at twenty past four. Most had no back plate left to say who had owned them.

The one you wanted had a cracked crystal and a brass case worn soft at the edges. When you thumbed the hinge open, a square of paper was folded tight behind the movement, the kind a jeweller slips in when he has been asked to keep something safe. The ink had run a little in the damp, but the hand was careful and upright. It said For you I shall live, with a date beneath in Roman numerals, the same numerals the dial used, so that the watch and the words seemed to agree on the hour.

"Found that in a house clearance in Wakefield," Okafor said, not looking up from his sorting. "Repairer's note, I reckon. Bloke wrote it to his wife, then never came back for the thing." He shrugged the way people do when a story has no ending they can sell. "Three pounds."

You paid him in coins warmed by your hand and walked out with the watch in your coat and the paper in the pocket above it. The rain eased off somewhere past the fish stalls, and by the time you reached the car park the sky had thinned to a pale wash. You wound the crown twice, then once more, and held the watch to your ear until the faint tick steadied into something you could keep.
