A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler had stopped playing by the time Arthur Penrose noticed the hall was emptier than it had been at the start of the reel. Thirty couples had gone round the boards at the harvest dance at Gull's Reach, and now there were only the lamps, the smell of wet wool, and a woman in a grey coat standing at the far end with her hand held out to him.

Nobody in Gull's Reach had seen her before, and nobody had asked her name. Her shoes made no sound on the boards. When she said he had the best feet in the parish, he laughed and took her hand, because his mother had raised him to be polite, and because the fiddle had begun again on its own, slow and thin, like a tune heard through a wall.

They danced. She counted under her breath in a rhythm like a clock being wound, and every turn took him further from the door and closer to the window, where the sea showed black with no moon on it. At the midnight bell she stopped dead, and her grip on his fingers tightened like a line taking a fish. "Run, you clever boy," she said, not unkindly, and her face was the face of every woman who had ever sent a child out of a burning house. "And remember."

He ran. He ran through the scullery, over the wet cobbles, and up the cliff path with the fiddle still going below him, and he did not look back once. Fifty years later he kept a lamp lit on that same path for the boys of Gull's Reach, and each one who came up the hill was made to say the names of every couple who had danced that night, so that no one could ever be taken without someone remembering who had been there.
