Script lettering on both thighs
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two thighs are shown from behind, each with a line of black script lettering on the upper thigh. The left line reads 'always on my mind' and the right line is partly visible, ending in 'in my heart'. The ink is black, with fine, slightly soft strokes, and the wearer's black lace stockings and dark skirt frame the composition against a pale, warm-toned background.

He stood on platform two every evening for a month. Same thing each time: a cigarette, a newspaper folded to a crossword he never finished, his eyes on the far end of the line. Ellen Marr ran the refreshment room across the way. She had a steady hand and a sharp tongue, and she had given him a cup of tea the day he arrived that he never paid for.
One Thursday in February the snow came sideways and the last train was cancelled. Ellen came across with her coat over her head and handed him a slip torn from the order book. On it, in her round careful hand, she had written two lines, the way you'd write a telegram. Always on my mind. And underneath, in my heart. Bert read it twice. He said nothing. He folded the slip into his breast pocket and walked home through the drifts with the lamps going out one by one behind him.
The train came in the spring, and so did Bert, with a ring box he had no nerve to open. What I remember is the slip, soft as cloth by then, still in his pocket on the day they married. She never once asked him to take it out.
