Quote tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a line of text reading find what you love and let it kill you, set across two lines on the inner forearm. The letters are solid black with clean, even edges and a typewriter-style serif shape. The skin is pale and the background is softly blurred, with the composition centred on the lettering.

Mind the puddle by your left boot, it's deeper than it looks, same as most things on this market. Sit on that crate. No, the one that doesn't wobble. There we are. You want a story while the rain keeps going, I'll give you one about Hettie Marsh and her Imperial, because that machine nearly had her in the canal once and she never forgave it.

Hettie kept a stall under the iron roof by the fish hall, and she mended typewriters for anyone who brought one in a carrier bag. Her hands were all knuckle by then. Every Thursday a lad in a donkey jacket left her a Remington with a stuck e, and every Thursday she fixed it and he paid her in cigarettes he never smoked. Nobody asked why he kept coming back with a machine that was never broken for long.
One night in February the river came over the cobbles and she couldn't get her shutters down. Her whole living was on those shelves: the carriages, the ribbons, the keys with their little letters worn silver. She stood in the water with the Imperial under one arm and carried it up the steps, soaked to the knee, swearing at the cold.
The lad came on the Thursday and found the Imperial dry on the counter. Beside it lay a slip of paper, every key struck so hard it had bitten through. He read it twice, folded it into his jacket, and went off into the rain without a word. Hettie never said what it said. But I've seen the slip since, pinned behind her till, and it read: find what you love and let it kill you.
