Anatomical heart and quote on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black sketched anatomical heart sits below a black lettering quote that reads what you love and let it kill you, with mixed typefaces and a script flourish. Red watercolour-style splashes run behind the heart and through the lettering, with a thin red line and dot adding movement. The tattoo is photographed close up on a forearm against a plain background with a plaid shirt sleeve at the edge of the frame.

The paint tin was already open when you reached the towpath, and the red had skinned over in the heat, so you stirred it with the wrong end of a brush. Mags Tolley had been dead a fortnight, and the narrowboat Hesper still wore her lettering on the cabin side, black capitals gone soft at the edges like wet newsprint. You were meant to paint it out before the surveyor came on Monday. Instead you kept reading it.

WHAT YOU LOVE, in a typewriter face she'd bought off a stall in Stoke, and beneath it a looping script she swore was her mother's hand. She said the line came from a poem. Her brother said it came from the back of a cough sweet tin. You never learned which, and by the third lock you'd stopped caring, because the cut took everything anyway: ice in February, gulls in August, and the boatyard men with their clipboards and their talk of scrap value.
The old black came away easily enough with a scraper, but under the words the red she had flung behind them had soaked into the grain years ago. It stood out in a rusty shape, a pulse of colour running down toward the waterline, and no amount of sanding would lift it. You could have left it. Nobody would have blamed you.
So you mixed a fresh tin, painted over every letter, and when the surveyor asked what the boat was called you told him the name was still on the bow, which it was. The red bled through the new white anyway, faint as a bruise, and you let it.
