Quote tattoo on the inner forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare forearm is held horizontally, with a two-line quotation tattooed in a black, upright serif typeface. The lettering is crisp and solid with no shading, and the ink is dark and fairly even across the skin. The background is a blurred bookshelf, and a striped sleeve is visible at the left edge of the frame.

This is the winter the power went out on Ashworth Road, and the caretaker, old Albert Venn, went out after the last bell with three paraffin lanterns hooked on his belt, because Tobias Quill had not come home.

Nobody thought much of it until Albert came back at dusk, grey to the lips, lanterns still burning, and said to the headmaster in front of the whole staff room, 'I am out with lanterns, looking for myself.' Then he sat down on the coal scuttle and wouldn't say another word. Daft, we all thought. We were twelve.
We found Tobias two days later, not in the reservoir and not under the bridge, but curled up in the stacks of the old library behind the boiler house, reading a battered atlas with a torch in his teeth. He said he'd been looking for the place where the lines on the map stopped being lines. Albert had gone looking for the same thing years before, and had come back with nothing but the lanterns.
So when I say the lamps are still in the cupboard under the stage, I mean it. Somebody ought to take them out and go and look. Tobias, if you're listening, you're at the back, by the bar, and you owe me a pint.
