Dear Pip, the van has died again outside Scarborough, so I am writing this on the back of a chip paper while Mr Vantongeren sulks under the bonnet. The rabbit refused to vanish at Tuesday's matinee and the sea wind lifted his top hat clean off the stage like a gull with a grievance. Eleven people in the front row watched the rabbit sit on the lip of the stage and look at us with complete contempt.

Last night in the boarding house he sat on the end of my bed and took out the old card he keeps in his waistcoat. It is soft as cloth now, with a lightning flash inked in one corner and a line scrawled across the back in a hand he swears belonged to his first master, written in a railway waiting room in 1931. Don't let the Muggles get you down. He said the Muggles were the ordinary folk with ordinary hats, the landlords and the council men who wanted the pier turned into a car park. I asked how he could stand them. He said they were the only people worth fooling properly, and that a good trick is only a kindness you have not yet paid for.

This morning he had the card out again, turning it over in the grey light while the sea came in grumbling over the rocks. Then he put it back, shut the bonnet with a bang, and the engine coughed into life as if it had been waiting for him to be kind to it. The rabbit is in the hatbox, pretending to be asleep. Write to me at the Grand in Whitby, and tell Mrs Oakes her cat has not forgiven me for the feathers.
