Quote lettering along the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a two-line quotation tattooed on the left side of a light-skinned torso, running across the ribs. The text is set in a calligraphic, slightly angular script in solid black ink with clean, even linework. The soft natural light and shallow focus keep the lettering central, with the skin and a dark background filling the rest of the frame.

The A-Z was due at the printers by six, and Hannah had reached page forty-one of the Manchester index when she found the slip of paper tucked behind the flyleaf of the returned copy. It was pencil, in a hand that leaned as if walking into a wind. A list of street names ran down one side, each one ticked, and beneath them, underlined twice, were the words: Not all those who wander are lost.

She walked home that night through Ancoats with the atlas under her arm, the sodium lamps turning the wet pavements the colour of weak tea. The name on the slip was I. Pike, and the address was out past Hulme, where the terraces gave way to a patch of allotments and a canal with a single bench beside it. She had checked every one of those streets on paper a dozen times, but she had never once seen them at midnight.
The woman who answered the door in a dressing gown said Ivor had died in March. He had been a bus driver for thirty-one years and had walked every street in that book the winter before he went, notebook in his coat, coming home with blistered heels and a new tick on the map. "He always ended up at the same bench," she said. "Never told me why."
Hannah sat on the bench for a long while. The canal smelled of cold iron and rain. Then she took the pencil from her pocket, drew a small tick beside the towpath on page forty-one, and stood up, understanding at last that the line was not a warning but a direction, and that the lost were the ones who never set off at all.
