Old Tom Pellow kept sheep on that headland the year the boats came back short. He had a ram called Mordue with horns coiled like a ship's hawser, and he was the most stubborn animal God ever wound up. Mordue would not go through the gate. He would not go round it. He stood in the gap all morning, staring at the sea as if the sea owed him money.

So the men tried everything. They offered him turnips, they offered him the vicar's hat. In the end Tom's daughter Ada, who could draw better than any man in Kestle, sat on the wall with a stick of charcoal and drew circles in the dust. Flowers inside flowers, curls of paisley that looped back on themselves like the tide running out through the rocks. Mordue watched her for an hour. Then he walked through the gate as calm as a deacon and lay down in the shade of the wall.

Ada said the ram had only wanted something to look at that did not move. That was the whole secret of it. Tom never believed her, and he died still swearing the ram had been bribed.

The skull still hangs in the chapel porch, if you care to look. Mind the horns on the way out.
