Skull, foliage and bee Taurus flash design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A skull in profile, with its jaw open, sits above a wreath of leaves and ferns and a bee inside an oval frame. Fine hatching and cross-hatching shade the skull, and a dotted circle and radiating lines surround it. The design is black ink on white, with the word Taurus above the line let none be the noose.

Dear Tom, the swarm came off the lime tree on Tuesday, the size of a Sunday hat, and settled on the gatepost where Dad's old rope still hangs from the hook. You'll remember the rope. Mum wouldn't let us throw it out after the business with the bull, and I can see now she was right to keep it, though not for the reason she gave.

Bramble, the Hereford, went through the wire the week you left, and when Ned Pryce came up with his lorry to fetch him he had the halter rope looped twice round the bull's neck. The beast bolted at the hives, went over the bank and came down in the ditch with the rope caught on his horns. Ned wanted a noose on him for the knacker's cart. I stood in the lane and told him he'd have to go through me first, and I think he was more startled than I was.
So I've been sitting with the swarm all afternoon, waiting for them to settle, and thinking about that rope. Ned cut it with his penknife in the end, and Bramble walked off into the gorse as if nothing had happened. Bees have a sense for these things. They won't take a place that has been hung with death, and this one has been hung with it for years.
Come up at the weekend and bring a fresh skep. We'll coax the queen into a box and see what she decides. I've left the gate open, and the rope is in the bin where it belongs.
Your loving sister, Bea
