Tall ship with billowing sails on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large sailing ship with full sails, rigging and multiple masts sits on the side of the ribcage, set into a sea of waves at its base. The linework is fine and precise on the hull and rigging, while the sails and clouds are built up with soft grey shading and stippled texture. The composition is tall and diagonal, with the ship's bow angled toward the upper back.

The topsail split off Gravesend, and Ada Penhallow was the only hand aboard who didn't swear when it went. She was halfway up the mainmast before the bosun finished shouting, bare feet hooked round the ratlines, the rigging humming under her palms like a fiddle string. Below her the deck was a grey sprawl of upturned faces, and above her the sail flogged and cracked, a ragged bird trying to tear itself loose from the yard.

Captain Rowe had the Marigold Vane on a close reach toward the Channel, and the clouds were stacking in the west the way they did before a blow, dark at the base and bruised along the edges. Nobody liked to be aloft in weather like that, but the ship carried sixty men and only one of them could sew canvas on a swaying spar without losing her grip. Ada took the needle from between her teeth and pressed the sailcloth flat against the yard with her knee, stitching by feel while the sea heaved beneath the bowsprit in long, pale swells.

By the time she came down the shrouds, hands raw and canvas dust gritty in her collar, the cloud bank had swallowed the coast of Kent and the first drops were hitting the planks like thrown gravel. Rowe asked whether she meant to stay for the Atlantic run or go back to her mother's bakery in Deptford. Ada said she'd see what the weather decided.

The mended sail went up again as the rain came in, a clean square of new canvas among the old, and she watched the ship lean toward open water until the coast had gone entirely.
