Realism portrait sleeve with clock
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey realism sleeve covers the forearm and reaches up the upper arm. A detailed portrait of a woman with her hand raised to her mouth sits at the centre, with long hair flowing into the shading above it. Roman numeral clock hands and numerals wrap around the wrist, and a large eye appears near the top of the arm against a dark background.

Dorothy Vane came back to the reunion with her hand already at her mouth, the way she had stood at the back of Miss Pryor's classroom when the answer would not come. Thirty-one years had passed since the Hollin Cross leavers' dinner. The hall clock above the serving hatch still said ten to four, the hour the bell had gone and she had slipped out through the coal door with her satchel and never sent word.

Old Tom Ashby, who had kept the school key for forty years, stood by the urn with a cup of weak tea. 'You'll want to see the clock,' he said. 'Nobody's wound it since. Says you'd know how.' She did. Her father had taught her on the mechanism in the church tower, the trick of easing the pendulum with one finger so it would not stop again.
She climbed the ladder behind the stage, dust on her good coat, and found the winding key hanging where it always had. The brass was cold. Below, the class of 1992 was singing badly and arguing about who had married whom. When she turned the key the first tick came so loud that the hall went quiet, and every face turned upward.
The clock ran for an hour that night and then stopped again at ten to four, as clocks do when they are asked to forgive something. Tom said it had always been like that. Dorothy took her hand from her mouth, picked up her satchel from the chair where she had left it, and walked out into the car park without asking anyone to wait.
