Realistic hand and pocket watch on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an outstretched hand with fingers curling downwards, with fine speckled particles falling from it towards a pocket watch with a visible dial and chain. The rendering uses smooth gradual shading, strong highlights and deep black shadow behind the hand, creating a three-dimensional effect. The design is shown in black and grey only, filling the forearm from the wrist to the upper part of the arm against a plain grey background.

The clock in the east tower had stopped the winter my brother Aldous died, and nobody in Harrowgate Keep thought to wind it again. I went up there at dusk with a lamp and a tin of oil, because the steward had asked me to see whether the mechanism could be saved before the spring fair. The stair was loose with damp. Pigeons had nested in the bell frame and left their feathers across the floor like a spill of old linen.

The pocket watch lay on the ledge beneath the dial, its chain coiled like a sleeping adder. I knew it at once. Aldous had carried it every day he was lord of the place, and he had never once let me hold it. Beneath it, on the sill, was a fine grey drift, the kind the masons leave when they have been cutting stone above. I touched it and it ran through my fingers, cold and weightless, and I understood it was not dust from the roof but sand, slipping from a hand that was no longer there.
I looked up. Through the arch of the window the last light had gone, and the wall beyond it was dark. Someone had set a hand against the stone outside, palm turned down, fingers curled as if to catch what fell. The sand came pouring from between them and filled the watch case until the glass cracked. I did not wind the clock that night. I took the chain instead, and when I came down the stair the pigeons had all gone quiet.
