Realistic angel with wings and candles on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large realistic angel in flowing robes fills the arm, with broad feathered wings spread behind her and her head turned to the side. Candles with flickering flames sit at the top of the design, and the sculpted folds of fabric are built up with fine grey shading. The composition runs down the arm, with soft pink tones visible near the base of the design and a blurred background behind the skin.

Sit nearer the brazier, the pair of you, and mind the cold doesn't get down your collars. Ask me about the angel on the Lamb Street steps and I'll tell you what my mother told me, which is that she was never carved for a chapel at all.

Old Hesketh the mason cut her from a block that came off a wrecked collier in the Mersey, the winter the sea took the lighthouse. He worked by one lamp, and every night he lit three tallow candles on the sill so he could see the folds of her robe. The tallow smoked. Soot ran down her sleeves like grey rain, and Hesketh said it was the only thing that ever made her look like she'd been out in weather.
When he died, nobody wanted her. The council sold her to a yard man who meant to drop her in the canal, but the cart lost a wheel on the cobbles outside the Crown and she stayed there three winters, facing the wrong way, watching the pub door. Men coming out at closing time stopped to light their pipes in her shadow. Some of them swore she had turned her head.
Here is the part I never believed until I was grown. On the night the lighthouse lamp was finally relit, the candles on the sill guttered out all at once, and by morning the wheel was mended and the yard man had gone. Look at her now, lads. She is facing the river, and the stone is still warm where the flame was.
