Seated angel with wings and halo on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A seated female angel, shown with her head bowed and hair falling forward, rests on a dark rocky base with a small figure at her side. Large feathered wings spread out on either side, and a halo floats above her head, all rendered with soft, smooth shading and fine detail. The image is a close view of the upper back, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a dark background.

The snow had come in the night and buried the gate to the bottom field, so I went round by the hedge with a bucket of mash and the dog trotting ahead, nose down. Dad had said the angel would be fine where she was, up on the rockery by the old well, but she was not fine. Her wings had taken forty years of weather, and the left one had lost a feather in the August storm, which I had found floating in the trough.

Mum carved her from a block of grey Portland that came off a lorry the year I was born, and she never quite forgave the stone for being heavy. The angel sits with her knees drawn up and her hair falling forward so nobody can see her face, which Mum said was the only sensible way to be an angel in a village like ours. The little stone dog at her feet lost its nose to a ewe in 1989. Every winter I brushed the frost off her shoulders with my sleeve and told her the lambing had started early.
This year the lambing had not started at all, and the ewe in the end pen had gone quiet. I stood in the cold with the bucket growing heavy in my hand, looking up at that bowed head and the pale ring above it, worn so thin by rain that you could see the sky through it. Then I heard the bleat. Twins, out in the straw, one leg folded wrong. I left the bucket on the step and went in.
Hours later, when the lamb was up and sucking and my hands had stopped shaking, I went back out with a torch. The drifts had piled against the rockery, and the angel wore a white cap now, her wings lifted at the edges as though she had been about to stand. I cleared the ice from her halo with my thumb. Some things only need keeping warm.
