Realistic bacon strips with banner on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
Two strips of bacon are shown in realistic colour, hanging down through an ornate black and grey scrolled frame. A grey banner across the lower half carries the words I have no regrets in black script. The shading on the bacon is soft and detailed, while the frame and banner use bold black outlines with grey shading.

The rule on the Margaret Rose was that nobody touched the galley before the skipper's first cup of tea, and you had broken it three mornings running because the smell of bacon had got into your dreams. Skipper Dunn stood in the wheelhouse door with his oilskins steaming and watched you lay the last rasher in the pan as if it were a summons. 'Fish don't eat fry-ups, Pete,' he said, which was a lie, because the gulls had been following the boat since Spurn Head.

You had a theory about the bacon. It came from a butcher in Grimsby who cured it the way his grandfather had, and it curled at the edges like a ribbon in a shop window. The crew called it sea-grease. Young Kieran, eleven days aboard and still green at the net winch, swore it was the only reason the hold had come up heavy on Tuesday. You did not argue. You flipped each strip with the fork, one at a time, the way a woman in Cleethorpes had taught you, though you had never learnt her name.
The storm came at noon, all grey walls and slamming water, and the net fouled on the seabed so the whole deck heaved against the gunwale. Dunn was thrown against the rail, cursing. In the chaos a rasher slid from the pan, skated across the galley floor and stuck to the mate's boot. He peeled it off, ate it without looking, then looked up, stunned, and declared it the finest thing he had tasted all voyage. Nobody spoke. The boat rolled, and the hold filled, and the wheelhouse bell rang for the first time in an hour.
Dunn wiped his eyes with a greasy sleeve, pointed at the pan with his whole arm, and roared, 'Another, Pete. And nobody tell the gulls.'
