Bacon strips forming a heart
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a tattoo showing two strips of bacon bent into the shape of a heart, with a bold black outline around each strip. The bacon is shaded with reddish browns, pinks and yellow highlights to suggest fat and lean texture. The heart fills most of the frame against a plain area of skin.

'Don't you dare tell me it's a heart, Dennis Hollis. It's two rashers that have got too close on a hot plate, and I'm not charging you extra for geometry.' Vera flipped the pair with her slice and they clung at the fold, the way they had every Saturday since February. Dennis wanted them laid so they met at the point, like his mother used to set them out on a Sunday, and Vera had refused him six weeks running.

She had run the griddle at the Gull for thirty-one years and never once bent meat for sentiment. The boning knife was for trimming rind, not romance, and the regulars knew better than to ask for hearts. Then came the March gale that took the front shelter off the harbour wall and killed the power for two days. The café filled with lorry drivers, a wet spaniel and a dozen people who had nowhere else to be. On the Thursday, with the gas cooker still lit on a cylinder, Dennis's wife Maureen came in alone and sat on his stool.
She didn't say much. She only pointed at the rack. Vera laid two rashers the way she'd been asked, pressed the fat into the crease with the back of the spatula until it set, and slid them onto a plate beside two fried eggs. 'Tell him it's still geometry,' she said, and went back to the window to watch the wind pull the sign off its hook. The rashers cooled on the plate, the fat pooling clear in the point of the heart, and nobody in the Gull mentioned it again.
