Tulips and lettering tattoo on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three red tulips at the top and along the sides, with green leaves curling between them over a brownish, fleshy background. A white lettered quote runs along a twisting ribbon through the design. The shading is smooth and realistic, and the colour is saturated across the leaves and flowers, set against a plain blue backdrop.

You learn the trawler's rhythm before you learn her name. The Marigold Rose out of Grimsby leaves at four with the tide, and the first week you are sick over the rail so often that the skipper, a man called Halloran with forearms like coiled rope, stops telling you to go below. You hold the rope when told, gut the haddock when told, and keep your mouth shut, which is the thing you are best at.

Ask the cook about the tulips painted on the galley wall and he says they came from a Dutch bulb boat in 1974, and that the lad who painted them drowned off Skagen before the paint dried. Nobody on board says much about it. Every night after the nets come up, you stand at the stern and watch the flat grey water close behind the boat as if nothing had ever been pulled out of it.
Near the end of the season the weather turns and the skipper keeps you on deck through a long night of hauling. Your hands split and bleed into the gloves. At dawn the sea goes the colour of pewter, and you see a single pink petal of cloud over the Dogger Bank, opening, then folding shut again as the wind shifts. Halloran catches you staring. 'Nobody looks at the sky on this boat,' he says. 'Keep your head down and you'll be asked back.'
You are asked back. You keep your head down the whole way home, and the next spring you find yourself painting a small red tulip on the inside of your own locker door, where no one will ever see it but you.
