Realistic black and grey rose on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large open rose dominates the design, with a smaller rose bud and dark leaves beside it. The petals are shaded with fine, layered greys and soft gradients that give the flower depth and volume. The design fills most of the frame against pale skin, with the leaves framing the blooms at the edges.

Mrs Ada Pickersgill had grown the same dark red rose against the north wall of her terrace in Halifax for thirty-one years, and every June she still went out with the secateurs before the milkman was up. The big bloom had opened that morning, heavy and grey-edged in the early light, its outer petals curled back like the lip of a bowl. Beside it, half-hidden under the leaves, the bud was tight as a fist and no more ready than it had been a week before.

"Leave the small one," her son said from the back step. He had driven up from Leeds to help clear the shed and had not yet sat down. "You'll only crush it."
She didn't answer him. She had learned, with the gardening and most other things, that the thing you were told to leave was usually the thing that needed you most. She cut the open rose low, above a leaf node, and carried it inside in her cupped hands, the way her mother had carried eggs.
That afternoon she set it in the blue jug on the windowsill and sat with her tea going cold, watching the bud. Nothing happened. Nothing happened all evening. Her son washed the cups and went to bed in the box room, and she stayed on in the dark kitchen with the streetlamp coming through the net curtains.
At four the next morning she heard a faint sound, like a fingernail tapping glass. The bud had split along one seam, and a crack of paler grey showed where the first petal was turning back. She didn't wake him. She stood at the sink with the kettle filling and watched the rose open itself, slowly, one layer at a time, until the light came up over the chimneys and it was ready.
