Realistic black and grey rose with stem
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large open rose sits at the top of the design, with its stem running diagonally down to the lower left and a leaf and small bud at the end. The petals and leaves are rendered with smooth grey shading, soft highlights and fine detail along the edges. The image is in black and grey only, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against plain skin.

Instead the bloom opens slowly, layer on layer, every petal the colour of pewter rain, and the dew sits along its edges like beads of mercury. Mr Hale from the big house says it is a trick of the frost. I have told him frost does not make a rose look like an old photograph.

The stem runs down from the wall at a slant, past a leaf with teeth like a saw, to a bud that has not yet made up its mind. Below the glasshouse the woods come right up to the fence, and the rabbits have stopped using the gap. On Sunday I cut one bloom and carried it down to the church, and Reverend Ashby held it under the lamp and said he had never seen shadows so kindly placed.
I have started to think it is waiting for you. Silly, I know. You always said the flowers in this valley were too polite to show their age. Perhaps that is all it wants, someone who remembers the red one to say so out loud.
I have left the spade by the door and the kettle on the hob. If you write back, put the colour in the letter, and I will pin it to the glass and see whether the rose takes the hint. Your loving sister, Ruth.
