Realistic butterfly on skin

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A butterfly with spread wings is shown in a realistic style, with fine antennae, a segmented body and detailed wing veins. The wings blend black with orange, yellow and teal patches, and the shading gives the wings a three-dimensional look. The butterfly sits near the centre of the frame against plain skin, with a fabric edge visible at the upper left.

Dear Ruth, The butterfly came in through the propped sluice door at ten past three, while I was counting morphine ampoules with Dev, and it settled on the rail of bed six as if it had booked the slot. Nobody on Ward 9 believed it was real until it opened and closed its wings under the strip light, black and rust with that bruised teal along the edges, like a stained-glass window someone had left out in the rain.

Mr Okafor in bed six, who has not spoken since Tuesday, watched it the whole time. I asked him if he wanted me to shoo it out and he shook his head once, very slowly. Dev wanted to catch it in a specimen pot and I told him no. So we left the window on the latch and dimmed the lights to the blue ones, and the butterfly walked up the blanket hem towards his hand, stopping at each fold as though checking the route.

It stayed until the handover bell. At six, when I came back with the tea trolley, the rail was empty and the window stood a finger's width further open than I'd left it. Mr Okafor was asleep, properly asleep for the first time in days, one hand open on the sheet where the butterfly had been.

I don't know what to make of it, love. Maybe it was just a daft thing that wandered off the bins. But I've kept the pot Dev offered me, empty, on my locker. Come up on Sunday and I'll show you. Your loving sister, Carol.
