Realistic colour portrait of a bald man in glasses
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large portrait of a bald man with wire-framed glasses, a goatee and a short-sleeved orange hoodie with a small dark patch on the chest. The face and hood are rendered with smooth blending, soft shadows and fine detail in the skin, glasses and fabric folds. The colour palette is dominated by warm oranges and skin tones with muted greens and yellows in the background, and the piece fills the upper forearm against a black backdrop.

Dear Ruth, the lorry drivers have stopped asking what the canvas is for. Since the snow shut the Aldren Pass in March I have been painting faces on the back wall of the Rest Stop, one a day, for whoever sits still long enough. Yesterday a man in a rust-orange hood sat across from me for an hour without once checking his phone, and I thought of you, because you always said the hardest part of a face is the patience it asks of the person sitting for it.

He had wire-framed glasses that he kept nudging up with one knuckle, and he had pulled the hood tight against the draught from the door. The greens behind him I mixed from the verdigris tin Dad left under the sink, and the yellow I got by letting the lamp shine through the window onto the palette. When I asked him to look at something past my left ear, he said there was nothing out there but the road. So I painted the road.
He came back the next morning before the plough, stood in front of the wall with his coffee going cold, and said the glasses were wrong. The lenses were too clean, he said, and nobody sees the world that sharp. I told him paint doesn't lie about that, and he laughed and paid for a coffee he never drank.
I've enclosed a photograph of the wall before the snow took the sign. Ring me when the road opens. The road is still there, the wall is still there, and the glasses, I've decided, are fine after all.
