Realistic portrait and cash bundle on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two views of a forearm tattoo show a photorealistic portrait of a bald, bearded man wearing wire-framed glasses and an orange hooded top, with a dark rectangular object beside him. Below, a rolled bundle of banknotes with a pink elastic band sits on a pile of blue crystal-like shapes, set against a shaded orange and brown background. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights on the skin, glasses and paper notes, and the palette mixes warm oranges and browns with vivid blues and pink.

The bundle is not in the card box where it belongs. You find it at half past four, wedged behind the cake stand in the back corner of the marquee, a fat roll of twenties held by a pink elastic band. Someone has tucked a paper bag of blue rock candy beside it, the sweets your cousin Dev swore would make the top table fizz. Nobody has asked you to look for anything. That is the first thing you notice.

Your Uncle Ray is sitting on a folding chair by the exit in an orange hooded top zipped to the throat, despite the heat, reading the order of service as if it were a racing card. His glasses are pushed up onto a bald crown and his grey beard is trimmed square at the chin. When you hold the roll up he doesn't look surprised. 'That's not for the bride,' he says. 'That's for whoever sorts the cars.' You ask who that is. He tips his head towards the car park, where a man in a pale suit is leaning on a silver saloon with the engine running.

You take the notes out anyway, because it is your sister's wedding and you have decided this is a problem with a shape you can hold. The man in the suit doesn't reach for them. He looks at the pink band, then at the blue candy in your other hand, and laughs once through his nose. 'Ray always did like a presentation,' he says. You understand, a little late, that the bundle was never meant as a gift, only a joke that someone forgot to finish.

You walk back inside with the roll in your jacket pocket and give it to the bride's father in the middle of the first dance. He weighs it in his palm, grins, and says the reception is paid for. By the time you look for Ray again he is gone, and the orange hood lies folded on the empty chair with a single blue crystal set on top of it, catching the light like a tiny lamp.
