Realistic portrait and shark on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A realistic colour portrait of a man wearing aviator glasses and holding a cigarette sits beside a large shark with its jaws open and rows of teeth visible. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients on the skin tones and the shark's eye and mouth. Warm reds and flesh tones contrast with cool blues and greys in the water behind, and the image is shown as two identical photos side by side.

Dear Tomas,

The boat came back on Thursday with the gulls following it in like a bad rumour, and Mr Ferris has been telling everyone at the Anchor that he saw the thing with his own eyes, grey as slate and as long as the Ardent. I told him to put his glasses on and look again, because nobody in Skerry Bay has ever needed a film star to tell them what a shark looks like. He only laughed and bought the round.
Mother has moved the sea chest back under the window where your father kept his charts, and she has stopped asking when you are coming home, which frightens me more than the gulls. The lighthouse keeper's boy says the water off the north stack has gone warm and oily and the crabs have all walked inland. I believe him. I have not been past the breakwater since you left, and I find I do not want to.
Mr Ferris also left his cigarette case on the quay. Inside was a photograph of him and a younger man squinting into the sun with the harbour behind them, and on the back, in pencil: Keep your nerve and your lenses clean. I thought of you. Keep yours too.
Write again before the autumn boats. Tell me the mainland has better tobacco and worse weather.
Love, Ruth
