Realistic cross with bearded face on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a cross with a bearded man's face set within its arms, wearing a crown of thorns across the top. The face and beard are shaded in fine realistic detail, with the ornate cross edges and ornamental lettering at the base rendered in darker tones. Warm reddish skin surrounds the tattoo, and the background is dark.

The lettering at the foot of the cross was the last thing Tomasz cut that winter, and he cut it twice. The first time the serifs ran fat where the stone wanted them thin, and Mr Alderton climbed the scaffold with his tea going cold in a tin mug and told him to put the chisel down and look at the thing properly.

The face had come from a plaster cast kept in the damp shed behind the lychgate, taken years before from a carving the frost had split down the middle. Tomasz had spent three weeks with the cast on the bench under a paraffin lamp, learning where the brow dropped, where the cheek held its weight, how the beard fell in ropes that never quite lay flat. The thorns he cut shallow, so rain would find them and sit in the grooves long after the sun had gone.

The vicar wanted the whole thing polished until it shone like a shop front. Tomasz told him the shine would be gone within a decade of weather, and that a face cut deep enough to hold its own shadow would still be looking out at the lane in a hundred years. The vicar frowned at the lettering and the rough, dark recesses around the eyes, then shrugged and signed the chit.

In March, Tomasz walked back past the churchyard at dusk. The low sun came sideways over the wall and struck the arms of the cross, and for a minute the carved face seemed to lift out of the dark stone, the thorns glinting with rainwater, the initials at its base burning gold where the light caught them.
