You have been told to stop logging the dolphins. Captain Idris Vaughan wants the manifest signed before the tide turns, and the form has no box for two grey shapes riding the bow wave of the launch at quarter past four. Still, there they are again, one a length ahead, the other tucked behind its shoulder as if sharing a secret with the water.

The border out here is a line of buoys nobody can see in the dark. Crossing it means a stamp, a torch in the face and a question about cargo. You have stamped four hundred names this winter, and most of the boats carry people who have already lost more than their papers. The dolphins ask for nothing. Their backs break the surface, the sea goes silver and then black again, and the swell smudges the pale wake into something like weather.

Tonight a rubber dinghy drifts into the torchlight, low in the water, and a boy in a borrowed lifejacket lifts one hand. You write the number. Your pen stops at the column marked vessel type. Behind you the dolphins surface together, close enough that you can make out the pale of an eye and the long curve of a jaw.

You log the dinghy as a fishing boat in difficulty, wave it towards the harbour lights and tear the carbon copy free before the duty sergeant can ask why. When you look back the water is empty except for a wide, dark swirl where something has just turned away from the glare.
