Dear Tom, the gull that came through the lamp room last night had a hook caught in its wing, a bent steel thing with a barb like a fish's bite, and a tuft of feather still snagged on it where it had tangled. Dad says it came off one of the Porthkerry boats. I cut it free with the small shears while he held the gull, and the bird went off over the rocks trailing a single white feather like a kite string.

The hook I kept. It's in the tin with your baptism card and the chipped blue lamp glass. I've been rubbing it with vinegar and sand so it shines the way the brass does. Mrs Pascoe at the chandlery says a hook that has caught something holds a grudge, and you shouldn't leave it lying where a child can find it. I think she was teasing, but I didn't argue.

The Harriet came in on Tuesday without you aboard. Captain Lowry said you'd gone ashore at Padstow to see about the engine and would be on the morning tide. He didn't look at me when he said it, and the feather that usually sat in his hatband was gone, which I'd never seen before. I've asked Dad to keep the lamp burning a little longer each night until you're home.

Come back on the tide, Tom. The gull is fine. I checked its wing from the gallery rail this morning and it went up sharp and clean. Write if the post is still running, and if it isn't, come yourself. Your sister, Nell.
