Realistic dragonfly tattoo on the chest
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
A dragonfly is shown in flight, with a green thorax, a long segmented green abdomen and four translucent wings shaded in purple, blue and pink. The rendering uses soft gradients and highlights to give the insect a three-dimensional look, with a small shadow beneath it on the skin. The subject is centred on a close crop of bare skin with a slightly pinkish tone.

Ruth found the dragonfly at twenty past three, stuck to the observation panel glass at the end of Ward 7, its wings going at a rate she could feel more than see. The lift doors had been propped open all shift because the porter kept forgetting the wedge, and the June air had come up from the car park smelling of cut grass and diesel.

Bed four was awake. Mr Okonedo, who had been a fitter at the power station before his chest gave out, watched her cup the insect in both hands like a pudding basin. "Darner," he said. "Not the big blue ones. Those are the hawkers. Darners go up and down the reservoir wall all afternoon, looking for something to eat." He wanted to know whether it was a male, because the abdomen was green, and she did not know, so she promised to find out on her break.
She carried it to the window at the end of the bay. The sash stuck, as it always did, and while she worked it free the creature shifted in her palms. For a moment the light from the nurses' station caught the wings, and they were not clear at all but violet at the edges and sky-blue through the middle, like oil on a puddle. Then her thumbs were warm and empty, because it had gone.
When she came back, Mr Okonedo said nothing. He just nodded at the window, then at the dark beyond it, and she understood he had been watching it the whole time. Ruth wrote up the obs, filled the water jugs, and did not mention the insect at handover, because some things did not belong in the notes.
