Realistic eye and compass on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black and grey tattoo across the upper back and shoulder blade, showing a realistic eye with detailed lashes and iris. A large white letter N sits over a dark splash and a thin horizontal line, and the words Never Look Back run vertically beside it in a typewriter style font. Soft shading and loose black drips give the piece a painterly, abstract edge against the skin.

At half past four the flour hung in the work light like slow snow, and Dora Haskett kneaded the third batch while the ovens ticked up to heat. Above the back door her father had painted a compass rose years ago, and the big white N had faded to the colour of old piano keys. It was the first thing she saw each morning and the last thing she saw each night, and she had stopped noticing it long ago.

Her case sat behind the proving cabinet, packed since Sunday. The coach to Carlisle left the square at six. She had told only Gil, who came in at four to fire the ovens, said nothing at all, and set a tray of cut rye beside her board the way he always did. He knew the route. He had driven it himself, once, before the bakery became hers.
Each time the bell over the front door rang, she felt the pull to turn round, the same tug you feel when someone is watching from a window. The milk man wanted his tea. A boy with a paper wanted two currant buns and a receipt. She kept her back to the shop and slid the loaves onto the rack one by one, counting aloud in a murmur so she would not lose her place.
At quarter to six she lifted the case, took the tray of rye from Gil's hands, and walked out through the side door into a sky going grey over the car park. Behind her the bell swung and went still. Gil stayed by the counter and watched the first loaf of the day steam in the window, its crust cracking open in the cold, until the coach lights had turned the corner and there was nothing left to see.
