Raven with spread wings on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large raven with wings spread wide across the upper back, its head turned to one side and its talons gripping a small curled shape. The feathers are built up with fine, layered black and grey shading that gives the wings depth and a realistic, three-dimensional look. The bird fills most of the frame against plain, bare skin, with dark hair visible at the top edge.

The gull had been the only thing left on the quay when the tide turned, and I should have known the bird that took its place was not a gull at all. Mam was already at the window with the lamp, counting the moorings the way other women counted rosary beads.

It came down on the bollard at first light, black as wet slate, and it did not hop the way gulls do. It spread its wings slowly, the primaries lifting one by one like a man unrolling a chart, and the shadow they threw across the harbour wall was wide enough to cover the Pelham boat. Old Tobias swore it had been out with the Marigold the night she went down, and that it had come home with a fistful of rope in its feet.
That was the thing it carried now: a coil of tarred line, curled tight as a fiddlehead, gripped in one foot so the rope hung like a question. I took it when the bird stepped sideways and let me. It weighed nothing. When I opened the coil there was a brass ring at its heart, and engraved on the ring were my father's initials, in the same careful hand as every birthday card he had posted from ports I could not pronounce.
I walked the rope to the end of the mole. The raven watched me the whole way, head cocked, one eye like a bead of ink. The boat came in on the next tide, low in the water, with nobody at the wheel but the tide itself, and my father was not on her.
