Wolf and forest on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head in detailed, shaded greyscale dominates the upper arm and shoulder, with dark areas at the top fading into lighter skin. Below it, a misty pine forest and distant mountain ridge are rendered in soft grey tones and fine hatched linework. The image is entirely black and grey, with the tattoo framed against plain skin and a neutral grey background.

The wolf had been waiting at the treeline since the last bell, and Marta could see its grey shape from the schoolhouse window while the others argued over the punch bowl. Nobody else looked. Nobody else ever did, her grandmother used to say, which was how you knew a forest had made its bargain with you.

They had come back for the reunion before the school was pulled down. Forty-one of them, grown and greying, comparing mortgages and grandchildren under the same cracked map of the Carpathian ridge that had hung over the blackboard for sixty years. Old Mr Halász stood beneath it and read out the register, and when he reached Marta's name he paused, the way the forest paused before a storm, and skipped it. The room went quiet. Then the wolf lifted its head outside.

She took the lantern from the hook by the door and walked out across the frozen field. The wolf did not move as she came close. Its breath smoked between the pines and its eyes held the last light like the glass of a bottle. 'You left something in the desk,' it said, in the voice of the register-keeper, 'a name you were given before you could spell it.' She had forgotten it on purpose at eleven, the winter her father took the family over the ridge and never came back for the school photograph. She said it aloud now. The wolf dipped its head, the mist folded over its shoulders, and the mountain behind it seemed to step closer.

When she returned, the register lay open on the table and Mr Halász was reading her name in full, slowly, the way you read a thing that has been waiting to be read. Nobody asked where she had been. Outside, the treeline had thinned to a grey line, and somewhere past it a wolf was walking home carrying a name.
