Realistic feather tattoo on the side ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather is drawn diagonally across the side of the torso, with its quill running from upper right to lower left. The barbs are rendered in black ink with soft grey shading and fine, feathered edges that suggest depth and texture. The plain skin background and loose grey top at the edges keep the focus on the tattoo.

The geese had gone south a week before the frost came, and Maud Tanner noticed the gap in the sky the way she noticed a missing tooth in the mouth of a dog she knew well. She was mending the hen house roof with tarred laths when her grandson Eli came up the lane at a run, cap in one hand, something pale and long held carefully in the other.

"It came down on the wire by the bottom gate," he said, out of breath. "Not a bird. Just this."
It was a primary feather, grey-brown at the root and dark at the tip, its quill still ridged and whole. Maud turned it over. The barbs were fine as thread and some of them had stuck together in a little clump, the way they do after rain. She remembered her own father splitting a quill with his pocketknife to make a pen for the ledger, and how he had told her a feather kept its shape only as long as it kept its oil, so a bird that was never still would soon be left with nothing but bare shaft.
She took the feather into the kitchen and laid it on the windowsill, where the low sun could catch the shading along its edge. Eli sat at the table and asked whether it was from the goose that had gone with the others or from something bigger. Maud said she didn't know and that it didn't matter which. The feather had been lying in the wind and now it was lying on her sill, and that seemed to her the end of the matter.
By supper the light had gone and the frost had settled white on the lane. Maud went out once more to shut the hens in, and found the feather had blown back onto the step. She picked it up, pressed the clump of barbs straight with her thumb, and put it in the pocket of her coat.
