Realistic feathers on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Three large feathers are shown overlapping diagonally down the upper arm, with fine barbs, shaded edges and small dark dots along the quills. The shading is smooth and grey-toned, giving the feathers depth and a soft three-dimensional look against the skin. The arm fills most of the frame, with the person's dark top and hair visible at the edges.

The goose came in on the Tuesday carrier's cart, wrapped in a feed sack that still smelt of the fen, and Mr Pallister wanted three flight feathers cut and trimmed by Friday or he would take his letters to Spalding. I said he could have them by Thursday. I had never cut a nib in my life, but I had watched my mother do it at the kitchen table with her tongue between her teeth, and that seemed enough to be going on with.

The first two split down the spine before I got the slope right, so I ended up with a pile of little brown tongues and a headache. The third held. Under the window light the vane went from pale ash at the base to nearly black at the tip, and along the shaft there were small dark flecks, as though someone had flicked ink from a brush. I sat with it in my lap a long while before I dared touch it again.
Mr Pallister came for them on the Thursday in his good overcoat and sat at the counter while the ink dried. He read his late brother's will, then read it again, then signed with the quill I had cut. 'Our father's geese were all speckled like that,' he said, not looking up. 'Nobody bred them that way on purpose.' He paid me in silver and left the other two feathers on the blotter, lying side by side and overlapping, the way they had grown on the bird.
That night I laid them across the oilcloth in my own kitchen and tilted the lamp until the dots came up grey on the quills. My mother's knife was still in the drawer. I did not pick it up. I only sat with the feather that had held and thought about how a thing can be made to look as though it was always going to fall that way.
