Black and grey realism tattoo of a feather breaking up into a flock of birds across a woman's upper back and shoulder.

Feather turning into birds on upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large feather rises diagonally across the upper back, its quill tapering down towards the shoulder blade, and its edge dissolves into a flock of birds in flight to the right. The feather and birds are rendered in soft smooth shading with fine detail in the barbs, and a dark smudged shadow sits beneath the quill. The palette is entirely black and grey on pale skin, with the subject framed from behind against a blurred outdoor background.

Sit down on the bench, love, the 4.10 is always late and I've never once known it otherwise. I'll tell you about the clerk who kept the lost property office at this station before the war, a man called Edwin Marsh, who had one rule: nothing left on the platform was ever thrown away. Umbrellas, gloves, a stuffed owl once. He kept them all in pigeonholes behind the ticket hatch, every one labelled in copperplate.

One wet November a feather came in. A long grey flight feather, quill snapped clean, tucked inside a timetable someone had left on the 7.42 to Crewe. No name, no ticket, nothing. Edwin turned the page over and found a pencilled line in the margin: Meet me where the birds go. Nobody claimed it. Every evening after the last train he'd hold it up to the lamp, and he swore the barbs shivered as if a draught had got in.

Then the spring the coal yard flooded, a flock came down on the signal gantry, a hundred starlings or more. When they lifted, they went west in one long dark smear, and the feather on his desk was gone. All that remained was a grey shadow across the blotter, shaped like a wing, fading slowly as the light came up. Edwin never spoke of it again, and the next morning the pigeonhole was empty, the label still in his neat hand: Owed to the sky.
