Realistic feathers on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a large realistic tattoo of several feathers running down the upper arm, with the subject's head and face out of frame. The feathers are drawn with fine, fibrous linework and soft grey shading, and a few dark dots appear along the central shafts. The image is in black and grey, with a plain indoor background and a dark top worn by the subject.

It had rained since six, the fine kind that gets under the awning and into the cardboard boxes. I was pinning the last of the guinea fowl quills to my board when Mrs Ashdown came in under the tarpaulin, shaking her umbrella like a wet dog, and asked whether I had anything that would take a grey fly on the Teme in October.

I didn't, not quite. I had the spotted ones, grey as wet slate and freckled black along the shaft, and she wrinkled her nose at them because she wanted the soft blue dun of a hen's neck. Her husband had tied flies for forty years at the kitchen table. She said she'd been keeping his box since March and had nothing left to put in it.
I went to the van for the back stock, the crate of old pheasant and guinea that Dad used to keep under the seat. Under a fold of brown paper I found a single long primary, dun, dotted down the spine as if someone had flicked a pen over it. I'd forgotten I had it. I held it out, and she took it and turned it to the grey light without speaking for a while.
"He'd have hated that," she said at last, and tucked it into her coat pocket where the rain couldn't reach it. I counted her change twice over. When she had gone I stood the board against the van and let the water run off the awning in a thin line, and I left the last quill where it was.
