Realistic lion head drawing

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A front-facing lion head with a full, flowing mane, drawn in fine pencil-style strokes. The eyes, nose and whiskers are rendered in detail, and the shading is built from dense hatching that deepens around the brow and mane. The image is monochrome and centred on a plain white background.

Dear Mary,

The canvas came down in Carlisle on Tuesday, folded by eleven men who never once looked up at the rafters where the trapeze used to hang. Mr Pell has sold the wagons to a scrapyard in Leeds and kept the lions, because nobody wants lions any more, only the ticket money they once brought in.

Old Sultan is still with us. You'll remember his mane, gone grey at the edges, and how he would lie with his chin on his paws and watch the crowd as if he were counting their coins. Last night he got up for the first time in a week and walked the length of the empty ring, slowly, head high, and stopped at the gap in the boards where the sawdust used to be swept. He stood there a long while. I think he was listening for the band.

I sat with him until the lamp guttered. Then I wrote to the council about the papers for the sanctuary in Kent, the one that takes old cats, and I posted the letter at the end of the lane before I could change my mind.

Tomorrow I'll drive him down in the horsebox, with the blanket Father used to throw over his shoulders for the photographs. Come if you can. Bring your good coat, it's going to be cold on the coast road.

Your loving sister, Ada

P.S. Pell asked whether we'd like the bill of sale framed. I said no. We have never been the sort of people who keep the receipt.
