Walking lion pencil drawing
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A lion with a full, flowing mane walks straight towards the viewer, with its head held level and its front paws stepping forward. The drawing uses fine graduated pencil strokes for the fur and shading, with dark accents around the eyes, nose and mane. It is rendered in black and grey on a plain white background, with the composition filling a tall portrait frame.

The lorry from the travelling show slid into the ditch at Hollin Bottom two hours before the lamps went out, and by the time you walked up the lane with a torch in one hand and the milk pail in the other, the lion had already climbed down the ramp and was standing in the frost by the gate as if it had booked the field. Its mane was the colour of wet bracken and it carried its head level, the way old Ashby carried his bull at the sale, and it walked straight at you without hurrying.

Mrs Pell from the next farm would have reached for the shotgun. You had only the pail. You set it on the gatepost, slowly, and said the things your grandfather used to say to heifers that had got through a fence: steady now, there's nothing here for you. The lion stopped close enough that you could see its breath going out in two grey threads, and it looked at you the way the dealers looked at a horse they had already decided not to buy.
Then it turned and went past you up the drive, setting each paw down in the slush as if the ground owed it an apology, leaving prints as wide as dinner plates. You followed with the torch because someone had to. In the barn it folded itself into the straw beside the old tractor, closed its eyes, and let out a long breath that rattled the hay in the rafters.
The keeper came at dawn with a rope and a face like a wet Sunday. He found you asleep against a bale with the pail still full, untouched, frozen to a grey skin at the rim. He said the beast had never once in four winters let a stranger near its feet. You told him it had only needed someone to stand still long enough to be walked past.
