Realistic lion head drawing
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing lion head with its eyes, nose and whiskers drawn in detail, framed by a full mane of loose, flowing strokes. The piece uses soft graphite shading and fine hatching to build up the fur, muzzle and brow, with darker tones around the mane. It is drawn in black and grey on a plain white background.

At ten past three the corridor on Ward 7 smells of floor polish and cold toast, and the only light comes from the nurses' station and the blue glow of the vending machine. You push the linen trolley past bay four without stopping, because Mrs Okafor has finally settled and you promised her daughter you would not wake her again. Pinned above the sink in the next bed is a pencil drawing the boy there made last week, a lion's head copied from a library book so carefully that the mane looks like weather coming in over a hill.

Nobody has told him the lion is unfinished. He has been asking the night staff to check its eyes, which he says are wrong because they follow you whichever way you move. You stop and look. The graphite is darkest around the brow where he pressed too hard, the whiskers are scratched in with the side of the pencil, and the eyes are exactly as he described: patient, slightly tired, and fixed on the door as if it owes them money.
He is awake when you come back with the drip stand. He holds out a blunt pencil and asks if you think the mane needs more work. You tell him it needs more shadow at the back, where the hair would fall into the dark. He nods as though you have passed a test, and you pull the chair closer and shade the strands in long, careful strokes while the drip ticks beside you. When you finally stand up, the lion's eyes are still on the door, and the window behind it has started to turn grey over the car park.
