Realistic lion head on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large lion's head faces forward, with a full mane that spreads out around the face and fades into shadow at the edges. The fur and muzzle are built from fine, layered shading and stippling, with strong contrast in the mane and softer greys across the face. The eyes are rendered in blue, the only colour in an otherwise grey-toned piece, and the design fills the upper arm and reaches toward the shoulder.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Bet had been told the lion was called Consul, and that he would eat anything the cook did not want, which was how she came to be scraping mutton fat into a tin bowl at three in the morning with the galley door propped on a coal scuttle. The ship was the Marchioness, four days out of Liverpool with a travelling menagerie in her forward hold, and the menagerie had lost its keeper to fever at Lisbon. Nobody aboard knew what to do with a lion except feed it.

She carried the bowl down the iron ladder herself, because the second steward had refused. The cage was lashed in the well under a tarpaulin that breathed when the sea moved. When she lifted the corner the lamp caught him: a great grey head, the mane spread across the straw like smoke that had decided to stay. He did not growl. He looked at her with eyes so pale a blue they seemed to have been left out in frost, and he waited, with the patience of something that had waited its whole life for a particular kind of mistake.

"Nobody's coming for you tonight," she told him. "It's only me and the mutton."

He took the bowl from her hand with a care that shamed the men who had handled him in port. Afterwards she sat on a crate with her knees under her chin and listened to him breathe. Somewhere above, the bell struck four, the ship leaned into a long swell, and the lion lifted his head to watch the lamp swing, the way a man lifts his head at his name called from another room.

In the morning she wrote to the owners that the cat was fed and would be fed again. She did not mention the eyes.
