Realistic lion head tattoo
Realism · Colour · Photo
A lion's head faces forward, filling most of the frame, with a detailed mane and green eyes. The fur is rendered with fine, layered strokes and soft shading, and the nose and whisker pads show pink and white highlights. The palette is mainly blue and brown with yellow tones in the mane, set against unmarked skin.

The lion on the gatepost at Hollins Farm had lost its left eye to a hailstorm before I was born, and Gran wanted both of them green for the wedding. I drove up from Leeds with a tin of enamel and a sable brush I'd bought for signwriting, because my hands were the only steady ones in the family that week.

Mr Pardoe, the bride's grandfather, stood at the gate with his cap in his fists and watched me work. The mane was already a patchwork of old blue paint, flaking where the frost had got under it, and I kept back the brass-yellow for the ridges where the stone still caught the sun. He didn't speak until I'd mixed the green twice, the second time with a drop of his late wife's nail varnish that he'd fetched from the kitchen in a jam jar.
"I carved that thing sixty-one years ago for a girl who said lions were too showy," he said. "She married me anyway. Said the eyes were the only honest part of me." I asked if he wanted the blue matched to the mane. He shook his head. "Make them look down the drive. She'll be coming up it at four."
I finished as the light went amber and the marquee lamps flickered on behind the hedge. When the bride's car turned in, the lion's eyes caught the headlights and held them, two green points on blue stone, and Mr Pardoe lifted his cap to the gatepost before he lifted it to her.
