Realistic moth tattoo on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A large moth with outspread wings is tattooed across the back of a hand, shown in fine shading with detailed wing patterns and a textured body. The wings combine black, grey and pale blue, with dark ink splatter running down towards the fingers on a grey background. A faint lighter moth sits at the top edge near the wrist, and red nail polish contrasts against the dark leather backdrop.

Dear Ada,

The signal box at Thornwick Halt has had a moth in it since Tuesday. Not one of the grey ones that bump the lamp, but a great brown thing with a skull pressed into its back like a thumbprint in dough. Mr Pryce says it is an omen and he will not sweep near it. I told him a death's head only comes where there is honey, and the only honey here is the tin of Mrs Hale's marmalade he keeps hidden under the lever frame.

The night the 11.40 came through without stopping, the moth sat on the glass of the lamp and beat its wings slowly, the blue bands on them going dark and pale as the signal arms swung. I wrote the times in the book the way you taught me, neat as stitching, and when I looked up the moth had gone. There was a smear of dust on the windowsill the shape of a hand, and the kettle was cold though I had not let it go out.

I do not believe in such things. I am only telling you because you always said the trains keep the best secrets, and I want someone to know I kept my nerve.

Come Sunday if you can. Bring the good thread.

Yours, Nell
