Realistic pocket watch with Roman numerals

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A large realistic tattoo of an ornate pocket watch with a clock face marked in Roman numerals, a pointer hand, and visible internal mechanical details such as gears and chain links. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights and deep shadows that give the metal a three-dimensional, polished look. The design wraps around the limb against a plain dark background, with the watch face at the centre of the frame.

Mind the loose tile by the lift, and don't you dare touch that trolley's glass, Sister's had it since before you were born. Right, where was I. Ward Seven, half past three, and the wall clock over the doors had stopped again. Night porters always blame the building, but Eddie Quill blamed the damp, and he took his grandfather's silver pocket watch out of his waistcoat and held it up to the strip light like a jeweller.

The watch was a tired old thing, its case worn to pewter at the edges, its chain tangled with three keys nobody could name. The Roman numerals had softened so much you had to guess at the IIII. It ran four minutes slow a day, and Eddie had long since stopped apologising to it. Every hour a bell rang somewhere down the corridors, and Mrs Halloran in bed nine would ask him the time, as if the answer might have changed since she last asked.

That night she asked him for the fourth time, and he told her, and she said, 'Your grandad would have known it to the second.' Eddie said his grandad had also been wrong about the lift, the weather and his own wife's birthday. Then he wound the watch at the nurses' station, slow and careful, the way the old man had taught him in a shed that smelled of paraffin and oiled brass. The second hand jerked, stuttered, and came round.

At six the first van idled in the bay, and the wall clock finally caught up with itself, its minute hand clacking into place. Eddie checked his watch against it and found them a minute apart, which he decided was close enough to be honest. He put it back in his waistcoat and went to meet the day, one hand on the chain, counting the numerals the way you count a flight of stairs in the dark.
