Realistic portrait of a bearded man on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large realistic portrait of a bearded man with his hair tied back, shown from the front and filling the forearm. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey gradients across the skin, beard and hair and sharp darker accents around the eyes and brow. The image is entirely black and grey against a dark background and a pale top-left corner.

You learn the greys before you learn anything else. Mr Abernethy stands over your shoulder on the first morning in the studio above the chandler's on Quay Street and tells you that a face is only a map of shadow with a few honest lines drawn across it. He hands you a soft pencil and a plate of glass, and says the sitter has been dead three weeks and his widow wants him looking like he had opinions.

The negative shows a stern man with his hair pulled back hard from the forehead and a beard cut close enough to show the jaw beneath. The light came from the left and fell hard across the brow, so the eyes sit in a pool of dark that the camera could not quite separate. You spend two days lifting that dark with hair-thin strokes, never black, always the grey of wet slate, until the eyes open and begin to look at you again.
On the third day the widow comes in to see it. She stands at the bench for a long time without speaking. Then she asks you to make the mouth a little less certain, because he never once in forty years was certain of anything that mattered to her. You do it. The beard softens at the corners, the lip loosens by a shade, and when she leaves you realise you have been holding your breath, as if the glass might fog.
Mr Abernethy takes the plate, holds it to the window and nods. "That's the whole trade," he says. "Put back what the light took, and let the rest stay in shadow."
