Realistic portrait of a bearded man on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a man with dark, wavy hair, a short beard and a white bandage across his eyes, shown from the chest up. Smooth blended shading and fine detail in the hair, beard and skin give it a photorealistic finish. A warm orange glow behind the head contrasts with the grey top and dark teal collar, and the portrait fills the frame against a black background.

The lamp went over in the fourth month of the Lenten fast. Brother Tomas Verrel had been grinding ochre for the chapter house when the fire took his sleeve, then his hair, and the smoke did the rest. When the linen came off, the world was a grey wash with a smear of light at its edge, like the glow the sun leaves on the fen after it has gone down behind the reeds. Abbot Geoffrey, who never trusted a thing he could not count, ordered a likeness painted of the scribe for the wall beside the altar, so that God would know whom to thank for the psalter.
Tomas would not let the painter touch the eyes. He told him to leave the bandage where it lay, a band of white across the brow, and to put the full orange of that fen sunset behind his head, because it was the last colour he had truly seen. The painter thought it was pride. The novices thought it was a joke at the abbot's expense.
On the feast of Saint Brendan, a young lay brother swore the painted eyes beneath the linen had turned to follow him across the nave. Tomas only smiled and said the picture had always been better at seeing than he was, and that it was welcome to the job.
