Black and grey portrait of a woman on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a woman with an elegant updo, drop earrings and a layered beaded necklace, her hand raised to her face while she holds a long cigarette holder. The tattoo uses smooth shading and fine detail in the hair, eyes and jewellery, with deep black areas for the dress and hair. The image is entirely black and grey, and the portrait fills the frame of the upper arm.

The fourth paste necklace went back across the counter before Ruth Calloway had finished pricing it. The woman in the grey coat had asked for a cigarette holder with a silver band, and Ruth had nothing in the case but a box of cracked amber mouthpieces and a tin of matches from a hotel that had closed in 1938.

Her father had taken the shop on Briggate after the war, and he had a rule about jewellery: you could tell a lie by the weight of it. Ruth had learned the rule on a stool under the window, sorting beads into tins by size while the trams rattled past. A real pearl kept its warmth against the thumb, and a fake cooled at once.

On Thursday the woman came back with a photograph folded small inside a glove. It showed a dancer above a dance floor, hair piled high, a long holder raised to her mouth, and a necklace of dark beads that looked almost black in the grainy print. "My sister wore this," the woman said. "She sold it in March, and I've been trying to buy it back ever since."

Ruth tilted the photograph to the lamp. The beads were jet, not pearl, and one stone was missing from the clasp. She went through the back drawer and found a loop of jet tied with green thread, still marked with a price in her father's hand from 1951. She set it on the counter between them and said nothing, and the woman, after a long time, took off her glove.
