Realistic rose and skull on an ankle

Realism · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A photograph of a large realistic tattoo on the lower leg and ankle, showing a red rose in full bloom with a grey skull partly overlapping its petals. The shading is smooth and soft, with detailed highlights on the petals and graded shadows on the skull. The skin tones blend into the surrounding leg, and a black lace-up trainer sits at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been up since four, before the hooter, cutting the last of the damask roses in the back yard of Number 14 with your father's bent scissors. The bloom is the colour of a bruise going yellow at the edges, and the dust from the pit head has settled on every petal overnight, so you breathe on each one before it goes into the bucket.

Across the rows, Mrs Tennant is already at the trestle table in the institute hall, laying out her jam and her leeks like cards in a game she has won every August since the strike. She will look at your rose and say nothing, which is worse than anything she could say. Your brother Danny went down the Wearmouth shaft at half five with his lamp checked and his sandwiches wrapped in greaseproof. He told you last night that the chalk skull on the shed wall was their grandfather's idea of a joke, something to frighten the cats off the coal.

You pin the bloom to the table at ten past eleven. The judge, a thin man from Sunderland with a brass pen, bends close and turns the flower slowly with one finger. From the lane, you know, the rose drapes over the shed wall so that it seems to rest on the pale, grinning mark of the damp, and he sees it now too, the way the petals fall open around that old white hollow. He says nothing for a long moment. Then he writes the card and gives you the blue rosette.

You walk home with the rosette pinned to your coat and wait at the shaft gate when the hooter goes at four. The cages come up slow with their black faces and their cloth caps. Danny's lamp is the last one out, swinging at his hip, and when he sees the rose in your hand he laughs and says it looks like it has been dragged through the coal. You tell him it has.
