Skull, rose and paintbrush on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A bold skull sits at the centre of the design, with a pink paint splash and a spray can on top of it. A red rose with green leaves and a paintbrush cross the lower half. The skull is shaded in beige and grey with black outlines, while the rose and paint use saturated red and pink. The tattoo fills the frame against a dark, glossy background.

The reunion was held in the assembly hall of Bramhope Grammar because the caretaker, Mr Odell, still had the keys and a soft spot for trouble. Nobody had seen the back wall since the spring of 1994, when Danny Ashworth was caught on a stepladder with a spray can and a paintbrush, and the head of art swore the mural would be painted over by morning. It never was. Under the dust sheet, a skull the size of a bin lid looked out over the stage, with pink paint running from one eye socket like a split lip.

Danny arrived late, with grey in his beard and a paint pot under one arm. He did not speak to anyone at the buffet. He walked to the wall, pulled the sheet back, and laid the brush across the skull's jaw as if he were settling a bet. The old girls from Year Eleven gathered round. Someone said the rose looked fresh. Someone else said the rose had been red for thirty years and only the light had changed.
His grandmother used to tell the village children that a painter who drew Death would owe Death one picture more, and that the debt was paid in colour. Danny had always laughed at that. Now he shook the spray can, and the hall filled with the rattle of the ball bearing. He drew a single line along the foot of the wall, from the rose to the edge of the stage, and stopped.
"That's the one I owed," he said, and walked out into the car park before the lights came up. Mr Odell found the paint still wet on Monday morning: a red rose with its thorns drawn last, and a pink splash on the skull that had not been there on Friday.
